PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Amelie Tonini makes history.

ENOCH, AB

The Northern Alberta Tomahawks are excited to have Italian Goaltender Amelie Tonini part of the roster for the 2022-23 season. She makes history by becoming the first ever Tomahawks female goaltender and one of the first female goaltenders in the GMHL West division, We sat down with Amelie and asked her some questions.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A GOALIE?

A: I've always liked the equipment and it looked like so much fun!

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOCKEY MEMORY?

A: I have lots, everyday that I get to spend with my teammates creates new good memories, they're alot of fun!

Q: IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAYING HOCKEY IN ITALY VS CANADA?

A: The speed is one for sure! Everything moves faster and the players have a far better release. The rink size is a difference as well and it takes some time to get adjusted to the angles.

Q: WHY DID YOU WANT TO PLAY FOR THE TOMAHAWKS?

A: I wanted to challenge myself and get back into playing with boys, which i've always preferred. A huge bonus is our goaltending coach Connor Munday who helps with my development. But don't tell him that, don't wanna inflate his ego haha!

Q: WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE SEASON SO FAR?

A: Getting to know the team better and having fun during practices, road trips are fun too!

Q: IF YOU WEREN'T PLAYING HOCKEY, WHAT OTHER SPORT WOULD YOU PLAY?

A: I've always wanted to try lacrosse or baseball, but they're not big sports in Italy so I never got the chance. Motorsports would be fun as well!

Q: HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO PLAY IN YOUR FIRST GMHL GAME, AND WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FANS?

A: I'm very excited to get to play, especially since it's a home game. The nerves are there but I know the team has my back! My message would be to enjoy the season and have fun watching some good hockey!

Amelie will be making her season debut against the Fox Creek Ice Kings Friday October 14 at the old barn! Puck drop will be at 8pm mst. Watch the game over at North Alberta Tomahawks | GMHL TV
